I'm writing up this just to address the issue of mocking people who bleach and lighten their skin, Calling them all sort of names here and there. Hmmmm, My brother, My sister, You never remove the tree wen dey inside your eye finish, you dea talk about the small stick when dea caro eye. Abeg, You gotta park well ooo.

That person you're mocking is more safer than you in many ways if you fix nails, use moisturizers, Shampoos, Powder & hair dyes. And how sure are you about the ingredient in his/her skin lightener? how are you sure its hydroquinone or mercury? And come to think of it, Is there anyone that's too safe in this world? Omo na Baba God dey save person jareeeee.

So i taught of compiling this list to inform you about the dangers of our day to day cosmetic products. This are commonlyy used deadly ingredients in cosmetics:

1. 1,4-DIOXANE:

1,4-dioxane, a carcinogen linked to organ toxicity, may be found in as many as 22 percent of the more than 25,000 cosmetics products in the Skin Deep database [1], but you won’t find it on ingredient labels. That’s because 1,4-dioxane is a contaminant created when common ingredients react to form the compound when mixed together.

FOUND IN:
Products that create suds (such as shampoo, liquid soap, bubble bath), hair relaxers, others

WHAT TO LOOK FOR ON THE LABEL:
Sodium laureth sulfate, PEG compounds, chemicals that include the clauses xynol, ceteareth and oleth

WHY DEADLY:
Cancer: Research shows that 1,4-dioxane readily penetrates the skin 1,4-dioxane is considered a probable human carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and is listed as an animal carcinogen by the National Toxicology Program. It is included on California’s Proposition 65 list of chemicals known or suspected to cause cancer or birth defects

2. HYDROQUINONE:

Hydroquinone is most commonly used in skin lighteners, products heavily marketed towards women of color. It is linked to cancer and organ-system toxicity.

FOUND IN:
Skin lighteners, facial and skin cleansers, facial moisturizers, hair conditioners, finger nail coating products.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR ON THE LABEL: Hydroquinone or tocopheryl acetate

WHY DEADLY:
Cancer, organ-system toxicity, respiratory tract irritation.

3. ACRYLATES:

Acrylates (ethyl acrylate, ethyl methacrylate, and methyl methacrylate) are ingredients found in artificial nail products. We are mainly exposed to these chemicals through inhalation or skin contact. Despite evidence of adverse skin, eye, and throat reactions to these chemicals, they continue to be used in nail products.

Artificial Nail Products (Acrylic Nails, Nail Enhancing Polishes)

WHAT TO LOOK FOR ON THE LABEL:
ethyl acrylate: Acrylic acid ethyl ester, ethyl propenoate, EA; ethyl methacrylate: ethyl methacrylate, ethyl ester, methacrylic acid, ethyl ester, ethyl 2-methyl-2-propenoate, EMA; methyl methacrylate: Methacrylate monomer, Methyl ester of methacrylic acid, methyl-2-methyl-2-propenoate, MMA

WHY DEADLY:
causes cancer, developmental and reproductive toxicity, organ system toxicity, cellular and neurological damage and irritation.

4. CARBON BLACK:

Carbon black is a dark black powder used as a pigment in cosmetics such as eyeliner, mascara and lipstick. It is produced by incomplete combustion of carbon-based products such as coal tar, and has been linked to increased incidence of cancer and negative effects on organs.

Eyeliner, mascara, nail polish, eye shadow, brush-on-brow, lipstick, blushers, rouge, makeup, and foundation

WHAT TO LOOK FOR ON THE LABEL:
Carbon black, D & C Black No. 2, acetylene black, channel black, furnace black, lamp black, and thermal black.

WHY DEADLY:
causes Cancer (possible), Organ system toxicity

5. HEAVY METALS:

Heavy metals like lead, arsenic, mercury, aluminum, zinc, chromium and iron are found in a wide variety of personal care products including lipstick, whitening toothpaste, eyeliner and nail color. Some metals are intentionally added as ingredients, while others are contaminants. Exposure to metals has been linked to health concerns including reproductive, immune and nervous system toxicity.

FOUND IN:
Lip products, whitening toothpaste, eyeliner, nail color, foundations, sunscreens, eye shadows, blush, concealer, moisturizers, eye drops

WHAT TO LOOK FOR ON THE LABEL:
Lead acetate, chromium, thimerosal, hydrogenated cotton seed oil, sodium hexametaphosphate. Note: products that contain contaminant metals will not list them on ingredient labels

6. NAIL POLISH REMOVERS:

Isopropyl acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, and n-methyl-pyrrolidone, are commonly used as the solvent in nail polish removers. Evidence suggests that these chemicals may cause reproductive harm and organ toxicity. They are a serious concern for nail salon workers and pregnant women.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR ON THE LABEL:

Isopropyl Acetone: Methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK), hexone, 2-pentanone; Methyl Ethyl Ketone (MEK): 2-butanone, 3-butanone, acetone; N-Methyl-Pyrrolidone (NMP): n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone.

WHY DEADLY:
causes Irritation of the skin, eyes and lungs; organ toxicity and cancer.

7. TALC:

Some talc may contain the known carcinogen asbestos, therefore it should be avoided in powders and other personal care products, unless it is known to be asbestos-free. Even asbestos-free talc should be avoided in the pelvic areas.

FOUND IN:
Baby powder, body and shower products, lotions, feminine hygiene products, eyeshadow, foundation, lipstick, deodorants and face masks.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR ON THE LABEL:
Talcum powder, cosmetic talc.

WHY DEADLY:
Causes Irritation, cancer, organ system toxicity

8. COAL TAR:

Coal tar is a known carcinogen derived from burning coal. It is a complex mixture of hundreds of compounds, many of which are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) [1,2]. Coal tar is used in food, textiles, cosmetics and personal care products.
Experimental studies have found that application of and exposure to coal tar produce skin tumors and neurological damage.

FOUND IN:
Shampoos and scalp treatments, soaps, hair dyes, and lotions.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR ON THE LABEL:
Coal tar solution, tar, coal, carbo-cort, coal tar solution, coal tar solution USP, crude coal tar, estar, impervotar, KC 261, lavatar, picis carbonis, naphtha, high solvent naphtha, naphtha distillate, benzin B70, petroleum benzin [3,4]

WHY DEADLY:
causes Cancer, organ system toxicity.

9. FRAGRANCE:

Many products list “fragrance” on the label, but very few name the specific ingredients that make up a “fragrance.” This lack of disclosure prevents consumers from knowing the full list of ingredients in their products. While most fragrance chemicals are not disclosed, we do know that some are linked to serious health problems such as cancer, reproductive and developmental toxicity, allergies and sensitivities. Clearly, there is a need for stronger regulations, more research, and greater transparency.

FOUND IN:
Most personal care products including sunscreen, shampoo, soap, body wash, deodorant, body lotion, makeup, facial cream, skin toner, serums, exfoliating scrubs and perfume.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR ON THE LABEL:
Fragrance, perfume, parfum, essential oil blend, aroma.

WHY DEADLY:
The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) lists 3,059 materials that are reported as being used in fragrance compounds. Of these 3,059 ingredients, some have evidence linking them to health effects including cancer, reproductive toxicity, allergies and sensitivities. MO

10. PETROLATUM, PETROLEUM JELLY:

Petrolatum, or petroleum jelly, derived from petroleum, is often used in personal care products as a moisturizing agent. When properly refined, petrolatum has no known health concerns. However, petrolatum is often not fully refined in the US, which means it can be contaminated with toxic chemicals called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)

FOUND IN:
Lotions, Cosmetics

WHAT TO LOOK FOR ON THE LABEL:

Petrolatum, Petroleum Jelly, Paraffin Oil, Mineral Oil and White Petrolatum (refined and safe for use).

WHY DEADLY:
Cancer. The primary concern with petrolatum is the potential contamination with PAHs. The National Toxicology Program (NTP) considers PAHs as a class to contain reasonably anticipated carcinogens [4] ; the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) lists 14 PAHs as probable or possible carcinogens and one PAH as a known carcinogen. A study on Long Island, NY, found that those women with high levels of PAH-DNA adducts had a 50 percent greater risk of breast cancer. The formation of PAH-DNA adducts, an indicator of PAH exposure, is linked to cancer development.

HOW TO AVOID THESE TOXINS:
You should look carefully at the labels of your product. Its also very possible that some manufacturers wont list them out tho, But the truth is that most of the manufacturers are unaware of these dangers. try your best to observe the smell of a product before using them. Be careful!
